Our goal is to provide the Eastbay with an affordable family oriented Mixed Martial Arts curriculum. Unlike many Mixed Martial Arts Gyms, our focus is to provide top notch instruction in an egoless, professional and fun environment.

Our staff consists of multi-discipline Blackbelts professional Military and Law Enforcement trainers as well as both amateur and professional MMA competitors. In comparison with more traditional martial arts schools, our training program is multi-faceted and incorporates combative techniques with specialized targeted cardio vascular regiments.

We provide our students with the same Close Quarters Combatives techniques taught to some of our military special operations and law enforcement professionals. Proven no nonsense skills that help them survive the most common hand to hand combat attacks scenarios they encounter. Our main training focus is to provide our students with the tools they need to survive win and most importantly avoid potential physical confrontation.

Classes are broken down by skill level.

Beginners:  We’ll teach the most basic and common tools of Mixed Martial Arts such Proper Punch and Kicking Techniques, Footwork and Mobility, Distance Management, Basic engagement rules, Ground fighting and proper mentality.

Intermediate:  In addition to the basic principles of the beginner’s course, we elaborate and instruct more advanced body mechanics while employing the basic movements learned in the beginners program. Furthermore students are introduced to basic fight strategies involved in competition and Street-Fight Scenarios.

Advanced: Our premier course. Our students in the advanced levels are taught the most devastating and complex techniques, movements, strategies and combinations that are fit for Full Contact MMA competition. We also cover the rules that govern most Mixed Martial Arts promotions and events.  The work-outs in our advanced course take our students to new heights in their fight game. Whether you’re 15 or 50, the advance course will focus on each individual student’s talents and strengths that are most apparent in their fight game.

Competition Team: In time, progression in our program would give our students the opportunity to try-out and compete for Team SSL. Only after coach and staff approval will a student be eligible and approved to fight in competitive Mixed Martial Arts Events. Skill level, health, mental readiness and maturity will all play an integral role in how we evaluate a student’s fitness for competition. The sport of MMA is extremely competitive and although many sanctioning bodies as well as commissions have brought safety standards including real time safety monitoring of the sport, many inherent risks are involved in participating in such events. Our students, whom we consider family is our number one priority, only after close observation and a review of their abilities will we give our blessings for any of our students to take on the endeavor of competition.

Kids Classes: 6 -12 years of age. Our Kids classes will focus on one of the most ignored subjects that face our future generation of leaders, Bullying! As parents ourselves, we here at SSL understand that it takes more than just learning how to defend oneself to prevent or stop an ongoing experience of being bullied. Unlike many martial arts schools, we not only teach our young members how to fend off and survive attacks we teach them the common contributors that bullies look for in a victim, we show them how to alleviate these traits if they possess them and how to initially handle problem makers when they encounter them.  Then we show our students how safely and effectively handle a confrontation if one might arise.  Unlike many of the anti-bullying programs now available in martial arts schools today, we show our students how to manipulate an attacker in a humane fashion, with minimum or “No Strikes” if at all possible.  We teach our students leverage based techniques that can be controlled based on their attacker’s response or level of intensity, in other words, complete and pure self-defense instead of aggression.

Juniors Champs Classes: 13-17 years of age. In our juniors program we touch on some of the philosophies that are covered under our bullying program, additionally, we instruct our students in the basics of Mixed Martial Arts and how to safely practice and execute the techniques they’ll be learning. Our juniors program is the perfect primer for young people to be introduced to an art that promotes physical well-being, mental fortitude and the confidence they need to tackle something that takes effort and drive. Unlike the reward or feeling they get from overcoming a video game level or any other virtual gameplay, they will slowly feel a sense of accomplishment as they progress in their skill level in MMA. Our Juniors Program gives our students the necessary tools they need to become productive adults, this is first accomplished by learning how to become disciplined martial artists.

Women’s Self Defense: Sadly, most of the traditional techniques being offered to women today are at the very least ineffective. Many women’s self-defense instructors would like to make the women that take their courses think that a few properly placed strikes or so called action movements would be able to fend off any attacker. The truth is these techniques although some effective, would require highly precise execution and only during opportune moments. If for any reason the technique fails, the aggressor now becomes more aggressive, more dangerous and even more determined to hurt his’ or her assailant. Most attacks are results of women being overpowered by their attackers.  Many factors play a role on the aggression and strength of an attacker. Whether under the influence of a controlled substance, mental instability or overall physical build, female victims for the most part are at a physical disadvantage when attacked.  Our instruction covers very simple and common sense strategies to identify or avoid attacks, however when attacked we provide the instruction any woman needs to keep a sound mind, conserve her energy and act on what the attacker gives her instead of expelling much needed energy completely fighting them off. We will cover techniques that will help women survive or neutralize an attacker with the least amount of effort and flee for help. Our program is based on the realistic “when” expectation rather than theoretical “if” scenario.
